Explore →Here's how most plush toys go from a sketch to a soft, huggable companion, and the safety rules toys are made to meet.
A plush toy starts as a character sketch. The design is then turned into a flat sewing pattern, with every piece shaped so the toy looks right once it is stuffed.
Most plush is filled with a soft synthetic fibrefill, often listed as “PP cotton”, pushed in through a small opening left in a seam. The amount used decides whether a toy feels squishy or firm.
Machines sew the fabric pieces together inside out, so the seams are hidden when the toy is turned the right way round. The last opening is closed after stuffing, and faces are often embroidered.
Toys sold for children are expected to meet toy-safety rules such as ASTM F963 in the US, EN 71 in Europe and AS/NZS ISO 8124 in Australia and New Zealand. Check each product page for its age recommendation.
